The 'Shaman', or 'Medicine Man' played an important role within the tribe. Doctor, councellor, soothsayer and general 'wise man'. On his decision the very survival of the tribe could rest. Is it time to move? are the Buffalo coming?, on these and many issues his decision was decisive. In the Spring, as the warm sun rose most Indian tribes knew that the hard times were over for another year and that food would soon be plentiful. The Shaman would leave his tribe and go alone to give thanks, and ask for spritiual guidance in the times ahead.
