The sculpture depicts a Pawnee of about 1830 dancing before leaving with the other members of his tribe on a raiding mission. The dance served two purposes, to call on the Pawnee's great spirit "Tirawa" asking for favour and good fortune, and to unite the party, making ready for battle.
