From the 1860's onwards the numbers of settlers arriving in America turned from a 'stream' to a 'tide'. On arrival in the east, a great many were lured on to the open spaces of the west. These vast spaces, home to about 3 million indians became a battleground with western and native cultures colliding. Cavalry, tested in the war years, were raised to patrol and dominate. Seasoned veterans formed the backbone, and rode thousands of miles, providing some form of law and order in the most remote regions.
