The Coldstream Guards were raised in 1650 on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. In 1860 the regiment, then billeted in Coldstream on the English/Scottish Border marched south to London to help quell civil unrest following the death of Cromwell in 1658. The regiment helped secure free elections in the new parliament which invited King Charles II to return to his throne. The Coldstream Guards wear red hackles on the right side of their bearskins and buttons are in pairs.
