The Coldstream Guards were raised and Monck's Regiment, (under command of Colonel Monck) in 1650 on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. Following the the death of Cromwell in 1658 and the political vacuum left in his wake, civil unrest occured. In London a tide of rioting and looting threatened the city and its inhabitants. In January 1660 Colonel Monck, with his regiment now billeted in Coldstream on the English/Scottish Border, decided to march to london to restore order.
The regiment arrived in London in the Spring and immediately set about enforcing the law and generally policing the city. Once law was re-established parliament set about securing elections for a new leader. Members agreed to invite King Charles II to return from France to the throne and establishing the political balance between monarch and parliament.
This figurine, launched in 2000, marks the 350th anniversary of the formation of Moncks Regiment, (now The Coldstream Guards). The soldier depicted is dressed in green with red facings, which was the reverse of the regimental musketeers who wore red with green facings. Pikemen, who formed the backbone of the regiment were massed in companies of about 100 men. They formed a dense phalanx against enemy cavalry warding them off with their long, iron tipped, pikes. Against infantry they manoevered with the support of regimental musketeers, advancing or retiring as the situation demanded.
