On the outbreak of WW1 in 1914 the total strength of the Royal Engineers was 25,000 at the end it was 330,000. The 63rd Field Company was a typical unit, formed in Aldershot in 1914, war trained in England until May 1915 before deploying to France where they joined the 9th Division as Field Engineers.
Throughout 1915 and the winter of 1916 the company saw trench service at Ploegstreet Wood and Hill 60. In the Summer they moved to the Somme where on July 1st they took part in the attack. In the first 21 days the Divisional Engineers had lost 200 men and 9 officers.
The sculpture depicts a Sapper in full battledress just prior to the attack on the Somme. He's carrying the standard issue .303 rifle and newly issued steel helmet. The 9th Division thistle emblem is on his left shoulder. This statuette makes a lovely retirement presentation or farewell gift to serving and ex members of the Royal Engineers.
Stands 8" tall.
